| Finally fixed the locations page so that you see every photo, whether or not it has a caption yet. No more of this viewing with or without captions. Uncaptioned photos in the list now invite you to enter one so that the photo can fulfill its purpose and be happy. Also added a little logging script to see which photos are being viewed (excluding the thumbnails), and another to log visits to the site. While this duplicates to some degree the inherint logging features of the web server, it will be easier to use this than to write code to process the logs. This should give the site the ability to do other silly things, for example to show a list the "Top Ten Photos." | |
| Converted the database from Microsoft Access and ODBC to MySQL. It went very smoothly; I only had to iron out one typo, two bugs, and one date format problem. Now that it's only MySQL, I should be able to bring up n thumbnails per page, rather than all of them in the selected group. This should primarily make the site a little nicer to use for anyone without a fast Internet connection. It will also make it easier for me to get into reformatting how thumbnails appear on the page. (Which is to say, in multiple columns rather than a single column.) | |
| Add "bgcolor='#FFFFFF'" so that people still suffering with Netscape 4.X don't get stuck looking at a godawful default gray background. Also corrected a little bug whereby the same Netscape people wouldn't see images that have a space in the filepath or filename. (A few such files snuck in with the Butt Lite II photos.) | |
| Vastly improved the display of captions with photos. Now each photo that has multiple captions entered will only display once, and all the photo's captions will display chronologically next to the photo. Also changed the page title in the header to indicate the event and location names as appropriate. Better for search indexes. (Indices. Whatever.) By the way, with the addition of Matt Osterman's Iron Butt Rally Sunnyside checkpoint photos and his promotional work to get them captioned, we now have 1856 photos and 312 captions online! I also created a little statistics page to keep count. Oh, and I uploaded the medium-size version of Doug Grosjean's photos of the day before the Butt Lite II. (If you see errors like that, tell me, okay? I want this site to be as good as possible!) | |
| Bug fixes after caption system test run by real users. (Thanks Chatty Morons!) Added option to view all captions with photos for a given location. Modified caption display to pay attention to line breaks inserted by submitters. Merged medium and large photo display pages into one, and it now keeps track of which size you were looking at when you return from entering a caption. | |
